Chimney and Smokestack Repair
Industrial chimneys and smokestacks are exposed to aggressive gases and chemicals that can accelerate deterioration of concrete and corrosion of reinforcing steel. Over time, this damage can significantly reduce the structural capacity of the structure. Fiber Reinforced Polymer (FRP) systems offer an effective solution for repairing and strengthening these critical facilities.
Structural modifications to chimneys are also common. For example, many power plants have installed Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) systems to reduce harmful emissions. Installing these systems often requires cutting large openings in the chimney wall to accommodate new ductwork, which can weaken the structure and require strengthening around the modified areas.
QuakeWrap® provides lightweight and high-strength FRP solutions for these applications. Thin FRP sheets, typically about 0.05 inches (1.3 mm) thick, can be bonded to the surface of the chimney much like applying wallpaper. These materials add significant structural strength while adding very little weight to the structure.
QuakeWrap engineers evaluate each project and design the appropriate strengthening system, including the number and orientation of fiber layers required. Detailed retrofit designs and sealed engineering drawings are provided to ensure safe and reliable repairs.
