Timber, steel or concrete piles can be repaired with PileMedic®

Submerged Pile Rehabilitation with PileMedic

Submerged piles are widely used to support bridges, piers, marine terminals, and offshore structures. These piles are exposed to aggressive environments where tidal wet–dry cycles accelerate corrosion in steel and reinforced concrete piles. Timber piles are also vulnerable to attack by marine organisms such as shipworms and wood borers. Traditional repair methods typically involve installing prefabricated fiberglass jackets around the pile and filling the annular space with grout. While these jackets provide some protection, they contribute little structural strength and their seams can allow moisture and oxygen to reach the pile, allowing corrosion to continue.

The PileMedic® system, developed by Prof. Mo Ehsani, represents a major advancement in submerged pile repair technology. The system uses thin laminates manufactured by saturating carbon or glass fabrics with resin and curing them under heat and pressure. The resulting laminates are approximately 0.025 in. (0.7 mm) thick and are supplied in rolls 4 ft (1.2 m) wide and up to 300 ft (91 m) long. Depending on the material selected, these laminates can be two to four times stronger than steel.

During installation, the laminates are cut to the required length and wrapped around the pile multiple times to form a seamless structural shell. The shell is then filled with grout or resin to restore the pile’s cross section and provide confinement. In addition to restoring axial, flexural, and shear capacity, the FRP shell forms an impermeable barrier that limits the penetration of moisture and oxygen, significantly slowing the corrosion process.

Independent studies conducted by agencies including the US Army Corps of Engineers, the Texas Department of Transportation, the Nebraska Department of Roads, and Caltrans have demonstrated the effectiveness of this technology for strengthening deteriorated steel, timber, and concrete piles. QuakeWrap engineers provide complete retrofit designs and sealed calculations to ensure each project meets the required performance criteria.
